The ASX healthcare sector has risen alongside the broader market, despite the prospect of further interest rate rises.

The S&P/ASX 200 Health Care index was up 1.66% for the past five days, while the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 rose 1.91%. Power said the sector’s performance is notable, given that interest rates are largely expected to rise again following higher-than-expected inflation data.

“We’re still in a global cycle of interest rates going up, which is hampering growth stocks, so it is really a risk-off market at the moment,” he said. Power also noted that the last couple of months of the year are typically seasonally stronger, but the current market mood is not giving much encouragement.

Leadership Changes at CSL

CSL has appointed Deborah Waterhouse as CEO and managing director, effective February 1, 2027, following a global search. Waterhouse brings three decades of experience at pharmaceutical giant GSK. The appointment was followed by news that CSL stalwart Brian McNamee will be succeeded as chairman by Gordon Naylor, who has served as interim CEO since February.

McNamee led CSL from 1990 to 2013, steering the company through its privatisation and stock market listing in 1994. He will retire on March 31, 2027, with Naylor to remain in charge as interim CEO until Waterhouse takes over. Current board member Carolyn Hewson will also become senior independent director, effective March 31, 2027.

These leadership shifts come as CSL aims to improve its financial performance and rebuild investor trust after a difficult stretch. Analyst Dr. Derek Jellinek noted that the company’s annual meeting provided the confidence investors were seeking, with FY27 financial targets reaffirmed and management confirming that Behring and Seqirus divisions are meeting expectations.

CSL’s stock has rebounded significantly, climbing roughly 57% over the past half-year.

Cochlear and Echo IQ Updates

Cochlear has reaffirmed its FY27 earnings guidance at its AGM, with no trading update provided. The company is targeting net profit after tax of $330-350 million in FY27, representing growth of 2-9%. CEO Dig Howitt told shareholders that the company’s strategy remains sound, despite external pressures being more pronounced and persistent than expected.

The company reported 9697 full-result EchoSolv AS assessments during the September quarter, up 193% year-on-year.

Mach7 Technologies has delivered its fourth consecutive quarter of positive operating cash flow, with $300,000 in Q1 FY27. The company is stepping up investment in its Flamingo platform, which supports medical imaging management and workflow orchestration.

Tetratherix reported a strong start to FY27, including its first commercial shipment of Tetramatrix polymer to the U.S. and positive early test results for TegenEOS and Optimatrix. Analyst Scott Power highlighted upcoming catalysts, including potential FDA approval for a dental application, over the next six to 12 months.

The company ended the quarter with $26.4 million in cash and no debt, while Power pointed to additional growth opportunities through new partnerships.

Healthcare Companies’ Performances

Cochlear’s FY26 revenue reached $2.3 billion, up 2% when adjusted for currency fluctuations, though net profit after tax dropped 21% to $322 million. Executives acknowledged that external challenges lasted longer than anticipated but stressed that the company’s strategy remains solid.

The company is concentrating on growing subscriptions for EchoSolv AS, its AI-enabled tool for detecting aortic stenosis.

Tetratherix made its first commercial shipment of Tetramatrix polymer to the US, marking the company’s first product revenue under its Precision Medicine franchise. The company finished the quarter with $26.4m in cash and no debt.

The company is catalyst-rich over the next six to 12 months, with key near-term catalysts including FDA regulatory approval for its dental application. They have a number of opportunities ahead of them.
